Ironman Kona 2027: date, course and training plan

226 km · swim 3.8 · bike 180 · run 42.2Hawaï2027 edition: 9 October 2027

The IRONMAN World Championship is raced in Kailua-Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaii: a 3.8 km swim in Kailua Bay, 180 km of riding on the Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway to Hawi and back, then a marathon along Ali‘i Drive and through the Natural Energy Lab. Entry is by qualification only. In 2026 men and women raced on the same day for the first time since 2019, and France’s Vincent Luis won the men’s race; the 2027 edition takes place on Saturday 9 October, again in Kona.

A demanding distance: it is wiser to have finished a shorter race of the same kind first.

Ironman Kona at a glance

Date
2027 edition: 9 October 2027
Formats
Championnat du monde IRONMANPlan below — 3.8 km sea swim, out and back in Kailua Bay, without a wetsuit (except for athletes aged 70 and over, under conditions); 180.2 km bike to Hawi and back (1,772 m of climbing); 42.2 km run (307 m of climbing). 2026 cut-offs: swim within 2h20, Hawi turnaround (km 95) by 2:40 pm, Scenic Point (km 153) by 5:10 pm, bike finished within 10h30 of racing, finish within 17 hours. In 2026 age-group waves started from 6:38 am to 7:45 am, after the pros. Nearly 3,000 athletes.
Registration
You do not enter Kona, you qualify for it, at an IRONMAN race that hands out slots. The winner of each age group, men and women, gets a slot automatically; the remaining slots go to the athletes who are fastest relative to a benchmark for their age and gender, the “Kona Standard” (the average of the fastest 20% over the last five mixed-gender Kona editions). The slot is accepted in person at the allocation ceremony after the race, with photo ID, and paid on the spot by Visa or Mastercard. In 2026 the entry cost $1,600 plus fees and taxes; no deferrals or transfers, and USA Triathlon membership (annual or one-day) is required. Other, narrower routes: the Legacy programme (12 full IRONMAN finishes, 12 years of history and never raced Kona; applications from 29 November to 31 December, $50) and drawings reserved for para athletes and Hawaii residents.

The 2026 course

Swim: in-water start by Kailua Pier, 3.8 km out and back in Kailua Bay, clockwise. Bike: after a short loop through town on Palani Road and Kuakini Highway, the course heads north on the Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway, across the lava fields, to Kawaihae, then climbs the Akoni Pule Highway to the Hawi turnaround (km 95); back the same way to Kailua Pier, 180.2 km and 1,772 m of climbing. Run: out and back on Ali‘i Drive to just before Pahoehoe Beach Park, up Palani Road, then the Queen K to the Natural Energy Lab (NELHA) and its turnaround, back along the Queen K and finish on Ali‘i Drive; 42.2 km and 307 m of climbing.

What the race asks of your training

Heat and wind

IRONMAN lists a daily high of 31 °C, and the athlete guide warns that temperatures can exceed 38 °C in October, over exposed lava fields. The marathon is run in the heat of the day: heat acclimatisation sessions in the final weeks, and a few long rides followed by a run in the middle of the day, prepare you for these conditions.

A bike leg exposed to crosswinds

1,772 m of climbing in hills of a quarter to one mile, up to 6%, with the climb to Hawi and strong crosswinds. Long rides should teach you to hold the aero position for hours at a steady effort, wind included: that is where your marathon is won or lost.

A sea swim without a wetsuit

Wetsuits are banned (water averages 26 °C): only a textile suit is allowed. Swimming 3.8 km without a wetsuit, in open water with a little swell, and practising sighting a buoy into the rising sun, avoids nasty surprises.

Two peaks in one season

You first have to qualify at another IRONMAN, often months earlier: the 2027 list currently runs from August to December 2026 (Vichy, Calella-Barcelona, Cascais, Cozumel…), and Lanzarote, in May 2027, also awards slots. After the qualifier, a proper break and then a fresh 12 to 16-week build bring you into form for 9 October.

Why this plan works

Science-based periodisation

Base → build → specific → taper, with a recovery week every 3 to 4 weeks. Load goes up, but never two hard weeks in a row without a breather.

Paces, not vague feelings

Every session has target zones (pace, HR) computed from your MAS or a reference performance. A MAS test is built into the plan if you don't know yours.

Three disciplines, one load

Swim, bike and run are planned together: brick sessions, key sessions spread out, and a coherent total load week after week.

A plan that listens

After each session you rate how it felt (RPE). Too hard? The plan eases what follows. Skipped a session? It reschedules or absorbs it.

Frequently asked questions

When is IRONMAN Kona 2027?
On Saturday 9 October 2027, in Kailua-Kona (Hawaii), according to ironman.com. The 2026 edition was held on Saturday 10 October.
Is the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona or Nice?
In Kona, for men and women, on the same day, since 2026. Nice hosted the men’s World Championship in 2023 and the women’s in 2024; it now hosts the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, on 12 and 13 September in 2026.
How do you qualify for Kona?
By finishing among the fastest in your age group at a qualifying IRONMAN, then accepting your slot in person, and paying for it, at the allocation ceremony after the race. Each age-group winner qualifies automatically; the other slots follow an age-graded ranking, the “Kona Standard”.
How much does a Kona slot cost?
$1,600 plus fees and taxes in 2026, paid by card when you accept the slot. No deferral or transfer to another year.
What are the Kona cut-offs?
In 2026: 2h20 for the swim, Hawi turnaround (km 95) by 2:40 pm, Scenic Point (km 153) by 5:10 pm, 10h30 to finish the bike and 17 hours to the finish, counted from each athlete’s start.
Ironman Kona: how many weeks of preparation?
For an athlete at intermediate level, Endu builds a 25-week preparation. If your race is closer, the plan compresses phases while keeping the taper; if it's further away, it lengthens the preparation, and when the gap is large the preparation starts right away, gently and at your current volume, before building up.
Is this plan well built?
Pass at Endu’s plan check, the same as for any plan: 20 of 20 checks passed. A 25-week build (recommended minimum: 16); a longest run never more than 4% above the previous month’s; volume rising at most 8% from one week to the next; 85% of the time at easy effort; the longest session 4 weeks before the race; a taper cutting volume by 76% in race week. The rules and their sources are public on endu.fr/en/controle-technique.
How many sessions per week?
This example has 7 sessions per week. You choose 6 to 7 training days and the exact days (e.g. Tue, Thu, Sat, Sun): the plan sticks to them.
I'm a beginner, is this plan for me?
Not as a first long race: if you declare a beginner level, Endu flags it. Aim for a shorter race of the same kind first; Endu builds that preparation too.
Can I follow sessions on my watch?
Yes, on Garmin and COROS. On Garmin, the Endu app (Connect IQ Store) shows today’s session and starts it as a guided workout. On COROS, link your account from your profile: your running, trail and cycling sessions land in the watch calendar. Other brands are not supported yet.
How much does it cost?
14-day free trial, then €7.99/month with no commitment or €59.88/year (€4.99/month). Unlimited objectives and sports.
