The 2026 course

Start at 7 am from the Grande Plage. Swim: 1.9 km in one loop, from the beach into the Vendée Globe channel, then up a 250 m pontoon to transition on Place du Vendée Globe. Bike: one 90 km loop through the Olonne forest and marshes, across ten coastal towns, 600 m of climbing; aid stations at km 23, 53 and 72. Run: along the harbour to the small pier of the green lighthouse, 200 m on the sand of the Grande Plage, then two loops from the Remblai to the Puits d'Enfer via the Lac de Tanchet, and a straight finish on the Remblai.

What the race asks of your training

A sea swim into the channel

You start from the Grande Plage, in the Atlantic, and finish in the Vendée Globe channel, before climbing a 250 m pontoon to transition. IRONMAN lists an average water temperature of 19 °C: wetsuits will very likely be allowed (up to 24.5 °C) and they are mandatory below 16 °C. A few sea swims before the race teach you to sight and to swim in the swell.

A rolling bike leg, in the coastal wind

600 m of climbing over 90 km, through forest and marshland: little relief, but you pedal non-stop and the coastal wind can weigh on you. Long blocks in the aero position, at a steady pace, prepare you better than hill work. Drafting is banned: 12 m between bikes and 25 seconds to pass.

A two-loop half marathon on the seafront

The half marathon runs along the harbour to the green lighthouse, covers 200 m on the sand of the Grande Plage, then does two loops from the Remblai to the Puits d’Enfer via the Lac de Tanchet, with an aid station about every 2 km. Bricks of bike followed by 20 to 40 minutes at target pace teach you to find your rhythm straight out of transition.

In 2027: a 70.3 elsewhere or the full IRONMAN

If you were aiming for this 70.3 in 2027, you have two options: another half-distance race, or the full IRONMAN in Les Sables on 27 June 2027. The latter calls for a longer, bigger build-up, with 5 to 6-hour rides: the sample plan below prepares a 70.3.

The plan below prepares the IRONMAN 70.3 Les Sables d'Olonne format, for an athlete at intermediate level with 6 days available per week. Until the official date is out, the example is set for July 2028. Aiming for another format? Why this plan works

Science-based periodisation

Base → build → specific → taper, with a recovery week every 3 to 4 weeks. Load goes up, but never two hard weeks in a row without a breather.

Paces, not vague feelings

Every session has target zones (pace, HR) computed from your MAS or a reference performance. A MAS test is built into the plan if you don't know yours.

Three disciplines, one load

Swim, bike and run are planned together: brick sessions, key sessions spread out, and a coherent total load week after week.

A plan that listens

After each session you rate how it felt (RPE). Too hard? The plan eases what follows. Skipped a session? It reschedules or absorbs it.

Ironman 70.3 Les Sables d'Olonne: how many weeks of preparation?
For an athlete at intermediate level, Endu builds a 21-week preparation. Is this plan well built?
Pass at Endu’s plan check, the same as for any plan: 22 of 22 checks passed. A 21-week build (recommended minimum: 12); a longest run never more than 6% above the previous month’s; volume rising at most 13% from one week to the next; 82% of the time at easy effort; the longest session 3 weeks before the race; a taper cutting volume by 65% in race week. The plan adapts to your declared level (beginner to semi-pro): starting volume, progression and intensity change. Endu also offers a "Discovery" mode without a race to build a base first.
Can I follow sessions on my watch?
Yes, on Garmin and COROS. On Garmin, the Endu app (Connect IQ Store) shows today’s session and starts it as a guided workout. On COROS, link your account from your profile: your running, trail and cycling sessions land in the watch calendar. Other brands are not supported yet.
How much does it cost?
14-day free trial, then €7.99/month with no commitment or €59.88/year (€4.99/month). Unlimited objectives and sports.
