Ironman 70.3 Barcelone: race discontinued, what to prepare instead

113 km · swim 1.9 · bike 90 · run 21.1CalellaRace discontinued: last edition on 1 October 2023

IRONMAN 70.3 Barcelona was held in Calella, about fifty kilometres north of Barcelona, on the same day as the full IRONMAN. It was dropped in 2024: its last edition took place on 1 October 2023. Calella keeps the full-distance IRONMAN in early October, but the 2026 edition, due on 4 October, was called off the day before because of a torrential rain alert in Catalonia.

What the race asks of your training

A half in Spain in spring

The Barcelona 70.3 was popular for its fast seaside bike course. IRONMAN 70.3 Valencia, on 18 April 2027, also swims in the Mediterranean and finishes with a flat half marathon. For a mid-April race, the build-up starts in the middle of winter: long rides are often done on a turbo trainer until March.

Swimming in the sea

In Calella as in Valencia, you swim in the Mediterranean, with a beach start. A few sea swims before the race get you used to waves, sighting without lane ropes and mass starts, which the pool does not train.

An October race, a summer build-up

For the Calella IRONMAN in early October, most of the build-up falls in July and August. Scheduling long sessions early in the morning and accepting a slower pace in strong heat avoids arriving worn out in September, just as the last big weeks begin.

The plan below prepares the same distance, for an athlete at intermediate level with 6 days available per week. Pick your replacement race when you create your plan: it will be calibrated on its date, your level and your feedback after every session.

Why this plan works

Science-based periodisation

Base → build → specific → taper, with a recovery week every 3 to 4 weeks. Load goes up, but never two hard weeks in a row without a breather.

Paces, not vague feelings

Every session has target zones (pace, HR) computed from your MAS or a reference performance. A MAS test is built into the plan if you don't know yours.

Three disciplines, one load

Swim, bike and run are planned together: brick sessions, key sessions spread out, and a coherent total load week after week.

A plan that listens

After each session you rate how it felt (RPE). Too hard? The plan eases what follows. Skipped a session? It reschedules or absorbs it.

On your watch

On Garmin with the Endu app, on COROS by direct sync: the guided workout shows up on your wrist, step by step.

Your plan, not a template athlete's

This plan is generated for an athlete at intermediate level with 6 days available per week. Yours will be calibrated on your MAS, your available days and your feedback after every session. 3 minutes. 14-day trial, cancel anytime.

Frequently asked questions

Was IRONMAN Barcelona 2026 cancelled?
Yes. The full-distance IRONMAN Calella-Barcelona was due on Sunday 4 October 2026 with over 3,300 entrants. On Saturday 3 October, Catalonia's civil protection service activated the emergency phase of its flood plan and suspended sports activities from 8 pm on Saturday to 2 pm on Sunday in 20 districts, including the Maresme, where Calella lies. IRONMAN therefore cancelled the race the day before, with no new date; it said it would try to offer entrants another race in 2026 where possible. This page covers the 70.3, a different race, discontinued after 2023.
When is IRONMAN Barcelona 2027?
Not officially announced yet: as of 17 October 2026, the race page on ironman.com shows the date as “TBD”. A calendar published by the triathlon press puts the 2027 edition on Sunday 3 October, in Calella, over the full distance: to be confirmed before booking. The 70.3 is not coming back.
When does registration open for IRONMAN Barcelona 2027?
Not announced yet. As of 5 October 2026, IRONMAN had postponed the opening of 2027 registration, without giving a date, according to the triathlon press. It will be on the IRONMAN website.
Does IRONMAN 70.3 Barcelona still exist?
No. The Spanish federation announced in September 2024 that the Calella event was dropping the 70.3 to return to the full distance only. The last 70.3 edition took place on 1 October 2023.
Which half IRONMAN can you race in Spain?
IRONMAN 70.3 Valencia, on 18 April 2027 according to the Valencia tourist office: a swim at Malvarrosa, 90 km of cycling towards the Sierra Calderona and back, then a flat half marathon in two out-and-backs through the Turia gardens.
Ironman 70.3 Barcelone: how many weeks of preparation?
For an athlete at intermediate level, Endu builds a 21-week preparation. If your race is closer, the plan compresses phases while keeping the taper; if it's further away, it lengthens the preparation, and when the gap is large the preparation starts right away, gently and at your current volume, before building up.
Is this plan well built?
Pass at Endu’s plan check, the same as for any plan: 22 of 22 checks passed. A 21-week build (recommended minimum: 12); a longest run never more than 6% above the previous month’s; volume rising at most 13% from one week to the next; 82% of the time at easy effort; the longest session 3 weeks before the race; a taper cutting volume by 65% in race week. The rules and their sources are public on endu.fr/en/controle-technique.
How many sessions per week?
This example has 6 sessions per week. You choose 5 to 7 training days and the exact days (e.g. Tue, Thu, Sat, Sun): the plan sticks to them.
I'm a beginner, is this plan for me?
The plan adapts to your declared level (beginner to semi-pro): starting volume, progression and intensity change. Endu also offers a "Discovery" mode without a race to build a base first.
Can I follow sessions on my watch?
Yes, on Garmin and COROS. On Garmin, the Endu app (Connect IQ Store) shows today’s session and starts it as a guided workout. On COROS, link your account from your profile: your running, trail and cycling sessions land in the watch calendar. Other brands are not supported yet.
How much does it cost?
14-day free trial, then €7.99/month with no commitment or €59.88/year (€4.99/month). Unlimited objectives and sports.
