Pace / speed converter
Convert a pace in min/km into a speed in km/h, and back. With a table from 3:00 to 8:00 /km and the matching times over 5K, 10K, half and full marathon.
Updated 30 September 2026
Your watch shows a pace in minutes per kilometre, the treadmill a speed in km/h, and your VMA is in km/h too. Switching from one to the other in your head is trickier than it looks, because minutes are not counted in base 10.
Enter a pace or a speed and the converter gives the other, with what it means in time over the usual race distances. The table below the calculator covers the most common paces, from 3:00 to 8:00 per kilometre.

How it is computed
An hour has 3,600 seconds. Speed in km/h is therefore 3,600 divided by the pace in seconds per kilometre: 4:30 per kilometre, or 270 seconds, gives 3,600 ÷ 270 = 13.33 km/h.
The other way round, the pace in minutes is 60 divided by the speed: at 13 km/h, 60 ÷ 13 = 4.615 minutes. The decimal part converts to seconds by multiplying it by 60: 0.615 × 60 = 37 seconds, or 4:37 per kilometre.
The times over 5K, 10K, half marathon (21.0975 km) and marathon (42.195 km) are the pace multiplied by the distance, assuming that pace is held from start to finish. They are conversions, not predictions: a pace you can hold for 5 km cannot be held for a marathon.

Create my planFrequently asked questions
- Is 4.5 min/km 4:30 or 4:50?
- It is 4:30. Half a minute is 30 seconds, not 50. It is the most frequent mistake when converting with a calculator: 60 ÷ 13.5 km/h gives 4.44 minutes, which is 4:27 per kilometre, not 4:44.
- Does treadmill speed match the road?
- Not quite: on a treadmill there is no air resistance and no ground to push back. A 1 % incline is often recommended to get closer at usual training paces. Calibration also varies from one machine to another: judge by feel first.
- How do I get from my VMA to my paces?
- Your VMA is a speed in km/h: this converter gives the matching pace, that of an all-out effort of 4 to 7 minutes. Your training paces are percentages of it — about 60 to 70 % for easy running, 83 to 88 % for threshold. The training pace calculator does that for you.
